On the eastern edge of the village, at a distance of 1 kilometre there existed old settlements known as “Paliomassara” meaning “Old Massari”. This area, until the end of the Venetian domination around 1570 was a separate village (casali) belonged administratively to one of the twelve Sections of Cyprus, the Pentayia Section. During the Ottoman domination (1570-1878) some of the villages were merged to achieve better administrative control. This resulted in the migration of residents from Paliomassara to Massari. Even today traces can be found of medieval settlement such as ancient residences, big caverns and old mills with saps. |
